Welcome back for Day 5 of the Countdown to my Cover Reveal for Wrong in All the Right Ways! Today I’m going to be discussing my favorite stand-alone books and book series, so let’s get started.
Stand-Alone Books
#3 Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
If I’m being completely honest, I hated this book at one point, but hear me out, okay. I was fifteen, and it was the assigned reading in my English III Honors class in high school. Let me just say: I hate being forced to read something. It instantly makes me dislike the book no matter how good it is. And that’s exactly what happened with this book. I was forced to read it in high school, and it wound up on my hate list. So how did it end up on my favorites list? Well, I decided I’d give it another shot after I graduated college, and I instantly fell in love with it. Every bad thing I’d ever said about it was erased with my second reading of this book. Fun fact: I love it so much that my debut novel, Wrong in All the Right Ways, is actually a YA remixed version of it. Cool huh?
#2 Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Let me specify: I like the book, not the Netflix TV series. I actually love this book so much that I refuse to watch that series. It was my first book that I read right out of high school, and its message really stuck with me: Every interaction (no matter how big or how small) means something to someone, and those interactions can be the deciding factor between life and death sometimes, so watch what you say and do. Coming out of high school, where on occasion, I had been teased or made fun of, this really hit home. It’s very well-written and such a great read.
#1 The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Of course John Green would top this list. It’s just what he does. I literally read this book once a year, it’s that good. It was my first read of John Green’s and I probably can quote the entire first chapter verbatim at this point. The writing is amazing and the story is so heartbreakingly beautiful that you have no choice but to like this book. It made me believe in love at a time when I thought it to be dead, and that is why I love this book. And yes, I cry every time, if you’re wondering.
Book Series
#3 Delirium by Lauren Oliver
This was my first venture into the dystopian genre and i was not disappointed. The plot revolves around a girl named Lena who lives in a society where they undergo a procedure that takes away their ability to fall in love. Crazy, right? I raced through this series and ended up a Lauren Oliver fan because of it. It’s so good! There are two other books in this series, and if you’re looking for a fix for your dystopian obsession, this is the book series for you.
#2 The Giver series by Lois Lowry
I didn’t end up reading this book until I had to teach it to my students a couple years ago, and boy was I blown away. Lois Lowry does a fantastic job of dropping us into this dystopian society and making us not want to stop reading until it’s all finished. It’s full of mystery and suspense, and I love that! There are three other books in this series, and I can promise you this: you need them in order to fully understand The Giver. If you haven’t read this series yet, what are you waiting for??
#1 Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am crazy obsessed with all-things Harry Potter. Have been for almost 18 years now. I’d read the first one when I was in third grade and didn’t pick back up the series until I had to evacuate for Hurricane Katrina, so it was the first REAL series that I’d truly invested time into reading. I just really enjoyed the journey. Like I said, I was a kid when I first began reading the books and I finished when I was a freshman in high school, so standing in line to get the final book at midnight was and having long-winded discussions about the last book with my friends at school made my upbringing that much more magical. And in case you’re wondering, yes, but I’m still waiting on my letter from Hogwarts to arrive by owl even though I’m 25. Pathetic, but that’s the effect that this series has on me. I’m obsessed!
